I just tried sending an email with nothing in the To field, and 2 addresses under Bcc, mine and my daughter's. When I received the mail addressed to myself, the message header bar (From, Subject, To, Bcc) had my addess in From (as it should), nothing in To (correct), but in the Bcc area it had BOTH addresses. I called my daughter, she is using an Apple computer and checks her mail on Gmail using her browser. When she looked at her message, it said 'undisclosed recipients', no addresses.
This is how it should be. BUT, it appears that Gmail is including ALL the Bcc addresses in each message. I always assumed that when I sent a message with Bcc addresses, Gmail would duplicate the message for each address, but remove all the other addresses from each one. It appears this is not the case. It looks like when Gmail receives a message with multiple addresses under Bcc, it does not display them itself, but if the message is downloaded, the multiple addresses are sent in the message. I don't know if other email systems also send multiple Bcc message that include all the Bcc addresses, or if this is just a Gmail fault.
I don't know if there is a standard for Bcc in email, but I would expect the SENDER to strip off all Bcc addresses except the one ihe message is going to. Clearly Gmail is not doing this.Conclusion: if you send a message by Gmail to multiple Bcc addresses, every recipient can see ALL the Bcc addresses if they are using Thunderbird.
